Cortex designs for the human experience. They connect with individuals and inventors looking to turn their concepts into reality, guiding them from the discovery phase to concept exploration to prototyping and production, and ultimately through the manufacturing process.
Their design principles are guided by ethnographic research, a social science research method that involves a deep dive by researchers into a cultural or social group. By employing this level of research in their designs, Cortex is able to reveal hidden trends, unexpected habits and unvoiced needs or expectations within a product field of interest.
Cortex has been a valuable participant in the Residency Program. On top of working on various projects at the technology center in Toronto, they have helped build the community by encouraging other companies to join.
One of the main projects undertaken in the technology center includes the prototype production of a 280-key colour-changing keyboard. The project is a collaboration between Dylan Horvath, president of Cortex Design, and Siemen Terpstra, who conceptualized the design.
The next phase of their residency participation will see them working on a project with fellow residents Marion Surgical, exploring robotics and augmented reality (AR) assisted ablative surgery. Cortex and Marion will also be experimenting with how to combine AR and robots to perform precision-based surgical tasks.
US Sailing has engineered a number of measurement and testing jigs that facilitate the set-up of boats to required standards.
Faced with the reality that his nephew may spend the rest of his life wheelchair bound, Trexo co-founder Manmeet Maggu was determined to build a device to help his nephew walk.
Perkins + Will’s Technology Lab leveraged its previous research into mass timber and robotic fabrication, combining expertise across offices in a year-long effort.
The residency program provides open workspaces and equipment for teams doing forward-looking work in the areas of construction, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
